A day in the life of a Modern Apprentice
Friday, 03 May 2019
Senior Director of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, Alison McRae, recently spent a day shadowing a Modern Apprentice at Glasgow Housing Association. In this blog, Alison shares what she learned from the experience, and encourages other employers across the city to get involved in taking on an apprentice of their own.
“I recently had the great pleasure of shadowing a fantastic young lady called Taylor McCarthy who is a Modern Apprentice (MA) with the GHA – part of the Wheatley Group. Taylor had already completed a MA with a travel company, but for a number of reasons decided that was not for her.
“By chance, Taylor received a flyer through her door from GHA about apprenticeship opportunities and decided to take action. She was soon accepted to become a Business Admin MA in the organisation and has never looked back.
“Since starting her apprenticeship, Taylor has had so many varied opportunities. She is mentored both formally and informally by a number of people in the GHA team, and can access work shadowing across a range of the activities. Daily tasks include anything from sorting out rent payments right through to being in the field with housing officers and managing relationships with fellow tenants.
“Taylor has now secured an SVQ Level 6 as a result of her MA experience and has been able to develop her communication skills, her self- confidence, as well as expertise in a number of office management tools.”
The key driver for Taylor has been her experience working with the community at GHA. She told Alison that she has been able to directly help people from all walks of life. Her mind is clear on her career path after her apprenticeship experience, and she is now focused on securing a job as a housing officer assistant.
“Based on what I saw – I have every faith that Taylor will be hugely successful in her ambitions and I wish her all the best with her next steps!”
