Global financial services firm JPMorgan Chase & Co employs over 1,500 staff in Glasgow at their world-class technology centre which provides support and software development for the firm’s worldwide businesses.
The Glasgow team set up their apprenticeship programme in 2015 with an intake of seven software development apprentices. Now, four years later, the firm’s graduate apprenticeship programme has been met with so much success that numbers have grown to 44, with a further 20 due to join the business in September 2019.
The graduate programme is offered in partnership with Strathclyde University and Glasgow Caledonian University, with each apprentice undertaking a work-based degree in software development.
Robbie Allan, Vice President at JPMorgan said:
“Our graduate apprentices are based here in the office four days a week and attend university one day too – it is an ideal balance which really allows them to integrate into the business and become a full member of the team.
As an employer there are so many benefits to having apprentices – most notably the fact that we get enthusiastic young people who are keen to learn and who add real value to our operations. Our apprentices also bring a fresh outlook as well as academic skills from their university courses which can be a real boost for our staff.”
JPMorgan has been engaging with Developing the Young Workforce Glasgow since 2015 to sell their graduate apprenticeship programme to young people at school who are making decisions about their career path.
“Having a diverse workforce in the technology sector is always challenging, however in the past two years, women technologists have made up 50% of our apprentice intake. This has been possible thanks in part to involvement in SmartSTEMs, with four of our 2017 cohort volunteering across schools and colleges to promote STEM to young people in Scotland with a focus on the gender gap.
We are really excited about welcoming our new intake of graduate apprentices in September and to continuing to develop our programme in partnership with Caledonian and Strathclyde Universities.”
