Speirs Gumley are a Property Management and Lettings Company in Glasgow with expert Property Managers for Residential and Commercial properties throughout Central and West Scotland.
Owner Lorraine MacDonald is a huge supporter of the work of DYW Glasgow and its partner organisations. She sits on the Developing the Young Workforce board and has been instrumental in some of the developments to date including work placements and Schools and Business Partnerships. This passion is reflected throughout the business with staff participating in a number of volunteering opportunities and supporting school events such as careers fairs.
They have been recognised this month for their commitment to helping young people prepare for the world of work through work placements, supporting apprenticeships and recruiting young people directly from education or training.
Speirs Gumley are currently supporting Foundation Apprenticeships which is a two-year programme for young people in S5. During S5 they spend a day a week at college and during S6 they have a day work experience with an employer. Ryan Kennedy, who attends their partner school RosshallAcademy, is undertaking the Business Administration framework and he spends every Thursday with the company. He has already had the opportunity to work in various departments including commercial property management, accounts operations and credit control and this has given him real insight into the world of work to help him make a more informed choice when he leaves
Speaking of his experience to date, Ryan said:
“I thought I wanted to go to University to study Business Management but after spending time with Speirs Gumley, I am considering an apprenticeship as I will earn as I learn and have a guaranteed job at the end of it”
Their office is extremely busy just now as they also have a young person from the University of Strathclyde undertaking an internship with the firm. Lewis spends every Wednesday with the firm while at University to develop his skills and gain valuable work experience. This is the second student they have had from the University to offer them valuable work experience.
The firm use Glasgow Guarantee to advertise jobs to local Glasgow residents. This scheme offers support for training, work, modern apprenticeships and job opportunities for Glasgow people. Speirs Gumley were able to access 50% towards the salary of a Glasgow young person. They have also supported Skills Development Scotland’s Certificate of Work Readiness programme offering valuable work experience, to an unemployed young person, which helped build his skills and confidence which lead to the young person successfully securing a place at college.

Speirs Gumley are moving offices early next year to the Clyde Gateway area. They already have a fantastic relationship with DalmarnockPrimary, recently providing the young local children with complimentary tickets to Glasgow Rocks (who they sponsor) season opener at The Emirates Arena. Speirs Gumley staff, together with two of their painting contractors, recently painted the offices of PEEK – who are a charity in the east end who help young people through play, create and thrive sessions and events sport and they are keen to develop lasting relationships with the local secondary schools.
