Female school pupils learn about STEM Subjects

Female engineers and apprentices from Scottish Water spent a morning with pupils from St Andrew’s Secondary to inspire them to choose careers in STEM subjects.

Around 150 young women in S2 at the East End school learnt about the different employment routes linked to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The activity forms part of a three-year strategic partnerships between the school and Scottish Water, set up by Glasgow’s ‘Developing the Young Workforce’ (DYW).

Hosted by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, it is a regional employer led programme of work aimed at increasing industry engagement with education and supporting more young people in to work.

The DYW team are in the process of linking every secondary school in Glasgow with at least one lead business partner.

This strategy was one of the recommendations of the Youth Employment Action Group and is now a key element of DYW Glasgow.

Businesses such as STV, Clydesdale Bank and

 Network Rail have entered into strategic partnerships with schools throughout Glasgow.

Stuart Patrick, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce said: “This is another great example of a major organisation working with one of the city’s schools to promote the link between business and education.

“Our DYW team are very close to aligning every school in Glasgow with a business sponsor, solidifying this relationship even further.

“Developing the skills of our future workforce is extremely important and promoting STEM subjects is crucial part of this process.

“There are many careers available to school-leavers in engineering, science and technology within Glasgow’s economy, with many routes to entry.”

Female graduates and apprentices engineers from Scottish Water delivered talks and activates to the pupils about their own career paths and how they are linked to STEM subjects.

Scottish Water’s partnership with St Andrew’s provides opportunities for the company to engage with the school’s young people and offering them information, careers advice and guidance about the water industry while promoting the sector and STEM careers more generally as a positive choice for young people.

Through its partnership, Scottish Water wants to encourage all of the young people it engages with to move onto positive destinations when they have completed their time at the school.

Craig Jackson, People and Organisational Development Consultant at the company, added: ”Today we’ve focused entirely on promoting the benefits for young people of keeping science and maths open as possible subject choices during what is a vital and formative time in their school lives.

“Bringing ten of Scottish Water’s female apprentices and graduates along to tell their own stories and describe the work that they do to all of St Andrew’s S2 females can really help to demonstrate the wide range of STEM opportunities that exist for young women in a business such as ours.”

Hayley Hendry, one of the S2 pupils which took part in the event said: “I didn’t realise there were so many career options within Scottish Water. I thought you could only go onto university but there are lots of apprenticeship opportunities available”.
